According to the Dictionary.com, Reputation is “the estimation in which a person or thing is held, esp. by the community or the public generally“. However, how can it be measured? What can one do to keep it or lose it in the eyes of the media and the general public? how do you benchmark reputation, either personal or corporate? Is there any special formula, an attitude, what should one do??
Wikipedia brings us the idea that reputation is an opinion, a social evaluation of the public toward a person, a group of people, or an organization. Equally important to many fields, such as business, online communities or social status.
Integrity in business has never been so important and vital. Reputation has been widely seen by most practitioners and writers as one of the most important asset an individual or a corporation may possess. Lewis defined reputation as the product at any particular moment, of fermenting mix of behaviour, communication and expectation.
People and ultimately the whole media has its own moral and ethical codes. It is nearly impossible to try to conceptualize when it comes to individual or corporate reputation. Why is OK for this person to behave in a certain negative way and another one that never had much of a negative image, but rather a pale amoral one, is always under scrutiny and under pressure from the media???
Reputation is imputed upon one’s image by the media and the public in general, sometimes the media is divided, other times there is a general consensus about this or that person’s image. Many will never recover from a bad publicity or a public debacle, others eventually will live through to tell the story.
With the advance of the electronic media and ultimately the word wide web, a reputation which has taken years to build can be lost overnight . “The impact of the Internet on the way companies manage their reputation is fundamental as it is to every other area of their operations – business is yet to meet this challenge.” (Laurence). According to Laurence (2001) in the early 00’s only 15 per cent of the companies monitored their reputation on the web and again three-quarters of the CEOs were increasingly concerned with negative information regarding their firms obtained on the Web.
My paper will study and research those issues facing corporate reputation and image on the social web. For an individual or a corporation, reputation is everything, a safe pathway towards brand leadership or recognition.

If i have interpreted correctly diagram above you don’t like Mr. Gordon Brown much…
As to the reputation, especially corporate reputation is something crutial for every enterprise. Reputaion is very fragile, it takes ages to build it and it can be destroyed by one unwise move.

Individual or corporate reputation, we live by it, integrity in life and in business has never been so crucial. Thanks for commenting Nina.

In my perspective, Public Relation hold an imortant player to keep and increase a reputation or image of one brand or some organization. I think you can put PR as one of marketing tools for keeping a good reputation on your dissertation.
